Product Setup

Setting up your Nanoleaf Essentials Bulbs and Lightstrips is quick and easy, so you can enjoy a next level smart lighting experience in no time.

Installing Your Bulb

Make sure your light switch is in the "off" position.

  • 1.

    Screw in the bulb and turn on the light.

  • 2.

    There are no hubs required to use Nanoleaf Essentials products, so once they’re installed you’re ready to pair.

Installing Your Lightstrips

Plan Your Setup

When you’re planning where to instal lightstrips, make sure to place the Controller in an easily accessible area. Additionally, if you choose to hide the controller, pair your Lightstrip with your device before installing it, as you’ll need to access the back of the controller during the pairing process if pairing with NFC.

note: Each Lightstrip Controller can power up to 10m of Lightstrips at full brightness. Extending it further will decrease the maximum brightness.

Cutting a Lightstrip

If you need to cut the Lightstrip to make it shorter to fit your space, connect the male end of your Lightstrip to the Controller before making any adjustments (4.1). Cut your Lightstrip from the other end (female side). Make sure to do so along the indicated cut line to avoid damaging your strip (4.2). NOTE: Once cut, the strip cannot be connected back together, so ensure you’ve measured properly before cutting.

Preparing Your Surface

Clean your surface to be free of dust, moisture and oil.

Attaching a Lightstrip

Attach the strip to the Controller, and the Controller to the PSU. Peel back the red tape on the back of the Lightstrip, and firmly stick the Lightstrip onto your surface (5.1). Press firmly along the length of the strip to ensure a strong adhesion (5.2). Plug them in to the power and you're ready to pair (5.3)!

Pairing Your Essentials iOS

Thread

If you have a compatible Thread border router set up in your home (like Apple HomePod mini), your Essentials Bulb will automatically begin using Thread with no additional steps required.

Standard Pairing Process for iOS

To ensure a smooth pairing process, please make sure you have the following things ready:

  • Requires iOS 10+, turn ON Bluetooth

  • Found on the welcome card or on the bulb.

  • Found on the welcome card or on the back of the Controller.

“How can one setup be controlled by multiple iOS users?”

This is accomplished with the Apple Home App and the Nanoleaf App.

Primary User

  • 1.1

    Open the Nanoleaf App.

    Select USERS.

  • 1.4

    Invite the secondary user with their iCloud email.

Secondary User

  • 1.1

    A notification will appear for you to accept.

  • 1.2

    In the Home App, select the home icon in the top left.

    Select HOME SETTINGS, a list of homes will appear.

  • 1.4

    Accept the home that has been shared with you. This will give you control of all devices in the same home. Note: secondary users can't add or remove devices.

Controlling Your Essentials

Controller

  • The Controller comes with 7 default colours. Double press to cycle through cool and warm whites. Long press for a colour wheel.

  • Long press for 100% brightness.

  • Long press for 5% brightness.

Turn your lighting on and off, control brightness, group lights by home and by room, create and use Scenes, and much more.

Dashboard

Control your rooms and devices. Choose an existing colour and Scene or create your own.

Schedules

Coming soon: Automate your Bulb to turn on or off. Currently, scheduling can be done through HomeKit with a Home Hub available (over Bluetooth or Thread) or through Google Home.

Voice Control

You can easily control your Essentials by voice in a few different ways. In the Nanoleaf App, make sure to name your bulb with something easy.

  • “Turn [Device Name] on/off.”

    “Set [Device Name] to 10% brightness.”

    “Brighten/dim the lights.”

    “Brighten/dim the lights to [%].”

    “Set [Scene Name].”

    “Set [Device Name] to [Scene Name]”

    “Set [Device Name] to [Colour].”

  • “Turn on [Device Name or Scene Name].”

    “Turn on/off the lights in [Room Name].”

    “Turn on/off all my lights.”

    “Turn off [Device Name].”

PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

Reset Options

If you’re experiencing any issues with your Essentials Bulb, try these steps:

A

Power Cycle

Power cycling your lights by unplugging them from power and then plugging them back in. You can also try to unscrew it from the socket (make sure it's powered off before you do it), and then screw it back in.

B

Bluetooth

Try toggling your Bluetooth off and back on, restarting the app you’re using to control your lights, or restarting your device.

C

Check a Switch

Make sure that your lights weren’t turned off by a physical switch as this would make them powered down and unresponsive.

D

Perform a Reset

This will delete your pairing and network information, so once the reset is performed you will need to pair again. Before performing this reset, delete your Essentials Bulb from your device.


To perform the factory reset on the Essentials Bulb, switch the bulb off, wait for 3 seconds, then switch it back on for no more than 1 second. Repeat this for a total of 5 cycles. If the reset is successful, the Bulb will flash red three times, and then it’s ready to be paired again.
