The Rhythm and the Music

Name – Cole Rolland

Location – Ontario, Canada

Occupation – YouTube Creator, Music Producer

Guilty Pleasure – I love cheesy pop music. I’m not sure if that’s a guilty pleasure if people already know about it haha

Confession – I crush Russel Stovers.

Music is all about creating something new. Whether it’s a memory, experience or giving a room a whole new vibe – and no one understands that better than Cole Rolland, a guitarist and producer who has gained an impressive YouTube following remixing some of his favorite songs. His remix of Alan Walker’s “Faded” has over 1 million views to date.

Walking into Cole’s studio, you’re immediately welcomed with a row of sleek guitars and a cool producer meets gamer station that causes instant envy. A blue, purple glow washes over the entire studio thanks to Cole’s Light Panels & Rhythm setup on the back wall behind the couch.

Sure it looks amazing, and it definitely makes for some social-worthy photographs (which is where we first connected, check out Cole’s IG @colerolland) – but the real magic happens with the intermixing of color, light and music.

“Music can be drastically enhanced by a visual experience. When you go to a concert, half of what makes a truly striking production so memorable are the visuals.”

Cole’s connection with the visual dimensions of music rather than just merely the audio is very clearly evident in his own musical creations – giving them a compelling and multi-dimensional edge that sets him apart from all of the noise on YouTube. In his videos, he could simply opt for a one-camera shot of himself playing a cover of “Wolves” by Marshmello and Selena Gomez, but instead he creates a striking visual by piecing together various detailed shots of his guitar riffs and facial expressions while playing. The vibrant lighting in the room also adds a captivating energy and ambiance to the video, and what was once just a catchy song has now become a stunning performance.

“There are so many ways to customize the [Light Panels] in order to change your audio experience into something so much more…I love having people over to the studio to show them a new track, get the audio just right, and set up Rhythm in the perfect vibe for the song. It creates a much more ‘fulfilling’ presentation.”

And when Cole’s not putting on a show, he uses his Light Panels to set the vibe in his studio space to tap into his creativy and write.

“Whether it be a combination of colours, a specific response pattern or both; Rhythm allows me to experience a track on another level.”

And we can see why. After all, the Rhythm was inspired by a love for music in all forms – transcending that experience to be so much more than just what we can hear.

Lighting is often seen as a mere function rather than a work of art, but Cole shows us that light is very much a form of artistic expression and an outlet to enact creativity. The colours in the Light Panels not only provide great lighting for his remixed masterpieces, but they also set the mood in his music studio, allowing him to experiment with different sounds and ultimately unleash his creativity. For Cole, lighting is his environment, and creating that environment sets him on his way to creating so much more.
