Happy International Women’s Day!

Every day – but today especially – is a day to empower women and celebrate all of their achievements around the world! But today also gives us a chance to reflect on how much more progress we can make towards achieving gender equality. We were lucky enough to meet up with Sam Dharmasena, a woman marching to her own beat whether she’s DJing for events like ‘Woman Crush Wednesday,’ blogging or coordinating charity events. We sat down with her to get her insights on what it means to champion women’s rights every day.

“I was going through some playlists and DJ sets that I was getting ready for an upcoming show, and I realized that a lot of the songs that I was going to play were by men…I was surprised because as a female DJ I’m always talking about how male dominated the DJ scene is or just nightlife in general, but it turns out I was contributing to that as well. That’s how Woman Crush Wednesday started”

Woman Crush Wednesday is an event Sam is coordinating on March 8th in honor of International Women’s Day. The event will include all the essentials of a night out but with a twist: an all-female playlist all night long And what better way to shake up the scene a little bit than to include our Nanoleaf Light Panels and Rhythm Module displayed so boldly behind her during the event.

“I had heard about Nanoleaf a couple of weeks ago, and I just think it’s a really fun and very creative way to incorporate lights and music in art!”

With the Rhythm Module, Sam expects that the crowd will be blown away to see the Light Panels react to every single button she presses and every dynamic change in the music. When she told the bar owner at Frank & Steins that she was bringing lights that react to music, he said “oh yeah, we have those!” Little did he know, these aren’t your usual strobe lights. These are Light Panels that will be displayed the way you would create a piece of art.

You can see Sam’s eyes sparkle as she talks about DJing and playing music for a crowd. She loves it, but like with any job, she believes you can fall into a routine of doing the same thing over and over again simply because it works.

“Incorporating Nanoleaf for the first time will be refreshing for myself to look back and see a change.”

Woman Crush Wednesday will be held on March 7 at Frank & Stein’s in Guelph, and possibly the most impressive part of this party, aside from the fact that Sam coordinated the entire event herself, is what she plans on doing with the cover sales. All the profits from this event will be going towards Guelph Wellington Women in Crisis, a feminist community-based organization providing services to women and their children on woman abuse and sexual violence. I think it’s safe to say that Sam is our Woman Crush this Wednesday…who’s yours?
