Celebrating the Month of Love with Nanoleaf

February 2019

by Alona Sadovska

Every person has their own understanding of love. Each experience and story we have helps to color our own idea of what love is. Love can be caring, calm, passionate, elusive, playful and even practical. Love comes in all different shapes, colors and forms, and it’s these differences that make it so special.

As we celebrate the Month of Love this February, we asked the Nanoleaf team (and their loved ones) what love is to them and how they express it.

Love is… holding them close

Alona, our Marketing Specialist, and her boyfriend Yaroslav were friends until it turned into their own romantic love story 4 years ago. She’s learned how to listen to his likes and dislikes and shows her love by constantly doing little things that make him happy, like cooking him different types of food from around the world. And even spending the whole day with him at the Auto Show (she can now easily recite all of the best car brands).

– How do you resolve arguments? “We usually talk about any issues that come up right away (or luckily before it happens), and Yaroslav is always great at finding a compromise. We don’t have to think about it, we just know that our love lets us have fun and fully enjoy life.”

Love is… supportive

Judith is our Customer Experience Specialist, and she shows love to her twin sister Christel by always being there for her and showing support. Despite being identical twins, they don’t have as much in common as you would think. They both agree Christel takes the place of the outspoken twin, while Judith is the calm one in comparison. Their bond for each other is unbreakable, so much so that when Judith decided to move to Canada 3 years ago, Christel packed her bags and joined in on the adventure too.

– What do you love about each other? “What I love about Judith is that she is a very patient, calm person who has a lot of sympathy for people. I love that having Judith as a twin sister – is like you’re always with your best friend.” – Christel.

“We know how to have fun together. We understand each other even without speaking out, just by a single look. Our inside jokes are what makes it so fun.” – Judith.

Love is … full of surprises

Love takes many shapes and colors. Sometimes love can surprise us in grand ways, and sometimes love shows up as little pleasant surprises found in the day-to-day. Either way, surprises can act as little boosters to keeping a relationship exciting and fun. Gimmy, our CEO, and his wife Sunny surprise each other and show their love in different ways. She likes to surprise him with what he calls “grand romantic gestures,” while he shows his affection through all the little things – like doing the dishes without being asked or getting her a glass of water when she’s thirsty.

What usually makes you smile when you’re together? “It is so cute when she packs my luggage for me before trips, and I don’t have to lift a finger!” – Gimmy.

“When he does the dishes without being asked!” – Sunny.

Love is… being there

Nathan, our Director of Product Development and his wife Melissa are lucky to have two amazing daughters, and this is one of the greatest things that represent their love for each other. This month we had a chance to meet Alice, their youngest daughter and newborn. They love that Alice is such a calm and happy baby, who is already trying to talk and show her affection at 3 months old! Alice smiles a lot when she sees Mommy, Daddy and little sister Ella around.

What do you love most about being a parent? “We love watching them learn and gain new skills, which is really exciting. Nathan loves when they come and cuddle to just spend time together; this is how they show their love. It is so hard to predict how to be a parent and how to express your feelings, as every kid is so different. You just have to be ready to adapt as new things come up.” – Melissa and Nathan

Love is… facing the challenges

Ben is our Product Engineer Intern here at Nanoleaf. Often times, he can be caught in a coding frenzy or working late nights at the office. His girlfriend Kaitlann shows her love to him by making time for him and meeting wherever he may be. They both believe that the best way to show love is by making time for the people you care about, no matter how busy life gets.

What do you love the most about Kaitlann? “She is always so positive, outgoing, and often gets happy from other people’s happiness. She is really wonderful and so good for me.” – Ben.

“He is passionate about everything that I do, and I always feel his care. His respect for me and the people around make me so confident in him.” – Kaitlann

Love is… sharing your secrets

Chris (Account Manager), Jessica (Office Manager), and Leslie (PR & Communications Manager) share a friendship that means supporting each other through challenges and offering stress relief when the workday gets to be a bit too much. They express their love with simple everyday gestures like making coffee in the morning, splitting the last piece of their favorite chocolate bar or sharing their favorite gifs with each other.

How does friendship help you overcome obstacles? “To be my sounding board and to support each other through a bad day.” – Chris

“Cracking jokes and smiling.” – Jess

“It just makes the workday go by faster. It feels like we’re a group of friends working towards one goal and not that we’re just here for work.” – Leslie

These stories are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to love, because love is everywhere, it comes in all kinds of different forms, painted and personalized by each person’s life experiences and perspectives. No matter how you love, or who you love, the most important thing is just that you do.

So with this Month of Love with Nanoleaf, let’s appreciate and celebrate Love in all its unique forms and cherish those who choose to love us, because after all, love is a beautiful thing.
