Nanoleaf MCP brings your lights into the AI platforms you already use, including ChatGPT, Claude, and any other platform that supports custom MCP connections, so there’s no new assistant to learn or separate AI experience to navigate. Once your lights are paired through the Nanoleaf Desktop App, simply tell your preferred AI what you want—from “help me focus for the next hour” to “change my lights when it starts raining”—and it can turn your intent, along with information and services it has access to, into changes in the space around you. The Nanoleaf Desktop App must remain open and running while you use the integration.

What is Nanoleaf MCP?

Nanoleaf MCP connects your Nanoleaf lights to AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant communicate with other apps and services. Once connected, you can control your lights using natural-language requests, such as “Create a cozy Scene for movie night in the living room.”

Is Nanoleaf MCP free?

Yes. Nanoleaf MCP is free for all Nanoleaf customers.

What can I do with the Nanoleaf MCP?

You can use Nanoleaf MCP to control supported devices and features using natural-language requests, including

Turning devices on or off
Adjusting brightness, color, and color temperature
Creating and managing Paint, Rhythm, and Dynamic Scenes
Playing Scenes and Playlists
Controlling supported 4D, Screen Mirror, and Sync+ features
Managing Circadian Lighting
Checking device status

Which products are controlled via the Nanoleaf MCP?

Nanoleaf MCP supports compatible devices connected to your Nanoleaf account through the Nanoleaf Desktop App. Supported products include Shapes, Lines, Canvas, Elements, Skylight, 4D, and Essentials.

Does Nanoleaf MCP use my AI assistant’s usage allowance?

Yes. Each message you send counts toward your AI assistant's normal usage limits, just like any other chat. Nanoleaf does not control or charge for this.

Do I need a Nanoleaf account?

Yes. Nanoleaf MCP uses your Nanoleaf account to identify and control your compatible devices.

Does it replace the Nanoleaf App?

No. Nanoleaf MCP works alongside the Nanoleaf App. You still need the App to pair new devices and update their firmware. Scenes created through Nanoleaf MCP will also appear in the App.

Is Nanoleaf MCP cloud-based or local?

Nanoleaf MCP works through the Nanoleaf Desktop App. Your lights need to be connected to the Desktop App using your Nanoleaf Cloud account.

Can I create and save new Scenes, or can I only play existing ones?

Both. Nanoleaf MCP can play existing Scenes and create new Scenes from a description and save them to your device. For example, you can ask it to create a sunset Scene with slow-moving oranges and pinks and save it as “Golden Hour.”

Can it control 4D, Screen Mirror, and Sync+?

Yes. Nanoleaf MCP can switch between 4D modes, adjust Rhythm and camera settings, start or stop Screen Mirror, and manage Sync+ devices.

Does it support Circadian Lighting and schedules?

Nanoleaf MCP can turn Circadian Lighting on or off and change its settings, but Nanoleaf schedules and routines are not supported.

Can I control multiple rooms or homes?

Yes. Nanoleaf MCP can access every compatible device on your account. You can name the device or room in your request, such as “Turn off the bedroom lights.”

Can I see how much energy my lights use?

This feature is coming soon.

Does it work with non-Nanoleaf lights?

No. Nanoleaf MCP only controls Nanoleaf devices connected to your Nanoleaf account.

What data does Nanoleaf MCP access?

Nanoleaf MCP reads your device list, device states, layouts, and Scenes so it can control your lights. It does not access your contacts, location history, or payment information.

Does the AI assistant see my device data?

Yes. The AI assistant sees the device information it needs to answer your request, such as device names and current states. This data is handled according to your AI provider’s privacy policy.

Is my Nanoleaf password shared with the AI assistant?

No. You sign in directly with Nanoleaf, and the AI assistant only receives a secure access token. Your password is never shared.

How do I disconnect Nanoleaf MCP?

Remove the Nanoleaf connector from your AI assistant’s settings. You can also revoke access through your Nanoleaf account, for example by going to Account > Connected Apps.

My device isn’t showing up. What should I do?

Make sure the device is online in the Nanoleaf Desktop App and linked to the same Nanoleaf account you used to connect. Then ask your assistant to “list my Nanoleaf devices” again.

The command worked in the App but not through MCP. Why?

Some features may not be available through Nanoleaf MCP yet, or the AI assistant may have selected the wrong device. Try giving the device a unique name and using that exact name in your request, such as “Set my Living Room Shapes to blue.” If it still does not work, contact support.

Why is there a delay before my lights change?

The AI assistant must understand your request and then send it through the Nanoleaf Desktop App to your device. A delay of a few seconds is normal.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?
